Introducing the 2023 CGDC Speedgame: Accept the Challenge and Unleash Your Creativity!

The 2023 Speedgame Challenge is underway! Due to our efforts to rebrand and revitalize the Speedgame, this announcement is going out a bit late, so do accept our apologies. The challenge will run from June 16, 2023, through July 7, 2023, and is meant to challenge you in a number of areas as a creative and as a game developer.

We have two exciting modes for you to choose from: Speedgame Classic and Speedgame Hardmode. Let’s dive into the details of each, shall we?

Speedgame Classic

• Dates: June 16, 2023, 9PM EST – July 7, 2023, 9PM EST

In Speedgame Classic, which is our first mode, you can challenge yourself, work with others in a small team, polish your work, or create something entirely new. Classic is the original format where participants are tasked with creating a game that synthesizes the essence, teaching, or story of a community-voted scriptural verse. This synthesis can happen through the narrative, story, mechanics, art, or some other component.

Throughout the challenge, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their creations and compete in various voting categories: Best Christian Teaching, Best Original Concept, Best Audio, Best Mood, Most Fun Game, Best Graphics, and Best Build. Prizes for the challenge will be determined based on these categories.

Verses:
Proverbs 21:22 – A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof.

Speedgame Hardmode

• Dates: June 30, 2023, 9PM EST – July 3, 2023, 9PM EST

Participating in Hardmode will force you to keep in mind scope creep, focus on designing and implementing just one mechanic, and improve your planning skills while you’re at it. Overscope, or design something too complex for your time and skill, and you’ll see yourself submitting an unfinished game! Hey, if it happens, that’s totally fine! That’ll be growth and experience for a next time!

The voting categories for Speedgame Hardmode include Most Fun, Best Graphics, Best Audio, Best Mood, and Best Overall and prizes for this mode will be announced soon as well.
